The Tea Trail in China

Beijing – Shanghai – Huangshan – Hangzhou – Wuyishan – Shanghai

Day 1

Depart London Heathrow, flying through the night

Day 2

Morning arrival in Beijing, meeting and transfer to the Prime Hotel, centrally located on Wang Fu Jing for a two night stay. Own arrangements for lunch and afternoon visit to Tiananmen Square & a tour of the ‘hutong’ – old back streets of Beijing. Own arrangements for dinner – we recommend the nearby Peking Duck restaurant.

Day 3

Full day visit with guide to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Lunch and return to visit the Summer Palace. Own arrangements for dinner.

Day 4

Day free in Beijing – recommend visit to Forbidden City with its excellent audio guide in English. Also, if there is time, visit the Temple of Heaven or Lama Temple. Shortly before 7.00pm leave the hotel for Beijing Station. Around 8.00pm depart on the overnight sleeper to Shanghai, accommodation in four berth soft class sleepers. (Take dinner on the train, take a picnic or have an early dinner before boarding)

Day 5

Arrive Shanghai main station in the morning, transfer to the Salvo Hotel for breakfast. There will be a full day guided tour of Shanghai visiting the Old City, Yuyuan Garden – with its zigzag bridge and tea house – prototype for willow pattern china, ultra-modern Pudong and the Temple of the Jade Buddha. Own arrangements for dinner and overnight in the Hotel.

Day 6

Arrive Shanghai main station in the morning, transfer to the Salvo Hotel for breakfast. There will be a full day guided tour of Shanghai visiting the Old City, Yuyuan Garden – with its zigzag bridge and tea house – prototype for willow pattern china, ultra-modern Pudong and the Temple of the Jade Buddha. Own arrangements for dinner and overnight in the Hotel.

Day 7

Visit to Hongcun village with its traditional Chinese architecture and visit a tea plantation – in this area the famous Keemum and Maofeng varieties are grown. Late afternoon, early evening, transfer to the Summit of Huangshan – stay in the summit hotel, facilities are simpler than down in the valley.

Day 8

Early morning call to see the sunrise over Huangshan. Breakfast and spend morning on Huangshan, return to the foot of the mountain by cable car, lunch in a local restaurant and transfer by road to Hangzhou – stay at the Wang Hu Hotel close to the shores of West Lake for 2 nights.

Day 9

Morning visit to Longjing village – the name means Dragon Well and the water and the quality of the tea from this area are legendary throughout China. In the afternoon sightseeing on West Lake, visit the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat and the National Tea Museum.

Day 10

After breakfast transfer to Hangzhou airport and fly to Xiamen in Fujian province, take lunch at the airport and then board connecting flight to the Wu Yi Mountain Resort, stay at the Yuehua Hotel for two nights.

Day 11

The day is spent following the Tea Trail at Wuyi Mountain and visiting other sights of interest.

Day 12

Morning relaxing at Wuyi Mountain, afternoon direct flight to Shanghai. Meeting and transfer to Salvo hotel.

Day 13

We recommend a day visit to the Garden City of Suzhou. Depart by train in the morning, the journey takes 40 minutes, on arrival you will be met by a local guide, sail on the Grand Canal, visit the Garden of the Master of the Nets, the Lingering Garden and silk reeling demonstration with factory shop(!). Lunch in Suzhou. Late afternoon return by train to Shanghai. Own arrangements for dinner.

Day 14

Transfer to Pudong Airport for return flight to UK – same day arrival.
