One Yuan = 10 jiao & 1jiao = 10 fen

You are recommended to take Sterling or US Dollar travellers cheques and/or sterling or US dollars in cash. Money can be exchanged at your hotel or at the local banks. The hotel exchanges usually have extensive opening hours, so changing money is rarely a problem. Exchange and commission rates in the banks and in the hotels are fixed by the Bank of China and are the same.

We recommend that you plan your spending and currency changing so that you have only a small amount of currency left, which can go into the charity box or be kept as a souvenir.

American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Diners and JCB credit cards are accepted in most hotels, many restaurants and shops (although not small local shops or markets). Sometimes there is a surcharge for paying by credit card. There are also ATMs where some of these cards may be accepted.

Do not change money on the street.
